Carnelian belongs to the chalcedony family that is found in many places like Brazil, India, the United States and Egypt. Its color ranges from a light orange to a deep reddish-brown, however it most commonly occurs in its iconic fiery red-orange. This silica mineral gets its colors from the iron oxide impurities within. Carnelian was first used as beads during the Neolithic period and has since been used for lapidary and decorative purposes.
