Homo Erectus Hand Axe
~ 300,000 years old
Morocco, North Africa
The earliest occurrence of Homo erectus was roughly 2 million years ago, walked upright on two feet and is the ancestor to modern-day humans. It is believed H. erectus was more social than previous species, and one of the first to create and use fire, to make art, and travel by water. H. erectus produced Acheulean stone tool hand axes by removing flakes with various hammer stones. The tools were multi-purpose for uses like skinning and preparing pelts, digging, and cutting trees.
