Lepidolite is a lithium-rich mica that occurs in pinks, purples, and reds in a granite pegmatite, which is an igneous deposit where large crystals grow due to unique conditions such as high concentrations of lithium. This relative of muscovite is known for its perfect one-way cleavage called "books" and for a shiny luster.
Because of the infrequent occurrence for environments that are rich in lithium, lepidolite is considered a rare mineral. However, it does not receive its pinkish-purple color from lithium--trace amounts of manganese is the reason for the beautiful colors.
Brazil, Madagascar, Sweden, Australia, Canada and a few states in the US are well-known localities for lepidolite.
