Aragonite is a common carbonate mineral that can be found in low temperature deposits near the earth's surface, appearing as cave stalactites and iron-ore deposits. It is formed by processes such as precipitation from marine environments.
Aragonite is a polymorph of calcite, meaning it has the same chemical makeup as calcite but has different crystal shapes and structure. It can be colorless or shades of red, brown, green, yellow and orange.
This mineral also naturally forms in most mollusk shells, oftentimes found in pearls.
Aragonite has been used to remove pollutants like zinc and lead from wastewater and even assists in keeping the pH levels of water at its natural level.
