Sardonyx is a variety of chalcedony that can occur with black, red, green, brown, and white bands. Alternating layers of sard and onyx give this gemstone its unique colors and name. 

Sardonyx has been utilized for 4,000 years to make cameos and intaglios for necklaces. Roman soldiers often wore rings or carried talismans made from sardonyx with Mars, the god of War, to bring good luck and ward off evil. Because it was an inexpensive stone, sardonyx was a favorite stone in ancient times and people from all social classes could obtain and enjoy it. 

Popular locations where sardonyx is found are Brazil, Madagascar, India, Germany, and Uruguay.
