The bicolor gem of pink and green tourmaline make up the interesting watermelon tourmaline. It is common to have a clarity problem along the color-change area of zoned tourmaline crystals because the changed condition that created the color change may have interrupted the growth of the crystal. Elbaite is the name given to the most colorful tourmalines, watermelon being one of them. It is well-known among jewelers as it is between a 7 - 7.5 on the Moh's hardness scale.
