Mahogany Obsidian is natural, volcanic glass that was created when lava cooled extremely quickly either from rain or from entering a water supply like an ocean, thusly preventing crystals from forming. It is likely that the reddish-brown coloring is from inclusions of hematite or iron.
Obsidian is technically not a mineral because it has different molecular compositions that relate it closer to a rock. Often referred to as a mineraloid, obsidian is fragile and can be broken easily revealing sharp edges.
Mahogany Obsidian can be found in various places including Mexico and Oregon. Many of the locations were originally discovered by Native Americans, as it was an ideal rock to use for knapping to create arrowheads.
