The name comes from the Spanish term, "piedra de yjada" meaning "stone of the loin" because Spanish explorers saw natives carrying the gem by their sides. It was then misprinted in the French translation becoming "pierre le jade." The Chinese character for jade, "yù," is one of the oldest characters, first recorded in 2950 BC. 

Jade can actually be two different minerals -- nephrite and jadeite -- both of which are genuine and very tough. Nephrite occurs in white, dark green, and a creamy brown Jadeite can be many shades of green banding from blue-green to emerald green to black.
