About 50 million years ago, this fish swam in a freshwater lake located in southwestern Wyoming.
When the fish died, it sank to the bottom of the lake where it was quickly buried. The soft lime muds encased the fish and, over time, the sediment hardened to become rock.
Once excavated from its resting place, the fish now reveals a part of Wyoming's geological past.
